This applies only to car on car accidents going back to 1930.
It also assumes that you are not rear ended. Getting rear ended in an older car is much more risky than a newer car.

A '62 coupe deville is 18.5 feet long (as long as a GMC sierra) and is fully steel. ITS HUGE and could probley beat the largest car or small SUV in a crash.

Perhaps not exactly the answer for you but consider the following fact

1956 Chrysler Imperial vs Geo metro , 1970 Cadillac Fleetwood vs scion, 1972 Lincoln vs BMW .They can scribble all the % they want but the #1 and greatest safety aspect of any vehicle falls upon driver awareness and safe driving procedure, lets look at an accident at 25 30mph your looking at thousands $ with a new car and they might even total it out, plus the deployment of the airbag which has save lives but also caused deaths and wrist , broken nose injuries -anti lock brakes which are useless on ice caused many accidents. They call the old cars tanks for a reason , simple, easy to work on, strong, powerful and built like tanks and from 1966 cars came with seat belts, but those can be installed
I drive a classic mini, and a modern car, I find my driving changes whilst in the classic, you learn to be a lot more cautious of OTHER car drivers..... it's amazing how many see a small old car and either pull some stupid manouvre or just plain pull out on you... you learn to anticipate these things and change your driving style to suite!
I'd choose a classic car over a modern lump any day.... gets you back to PROPER driving! :-)Vintage or classic cars have far more character than new cars. How does the safety aspect in accidents compare?
Newer cars are safer, but read on. Newer cars are designed with "crumple Zones", which means they are designed to crumple up in a controled manner in the event of a crash. This aids in reducing the severity of the impact on passengers inside the car, kind of like a cushion. Classic cars are cool, but if you're comparing safety against new cars, there's no comparison. Air bags are also something you won't find on a classic car. You're also less likely to have a crash in a newer car that features ABS brakes and newer suspension technology, giving you more control over the car in the event that you have to brake suddenly. I own and have restored a classic car over the last 4yrs. Wheather you get a new car, or an awsome classic, how you drive will more predicted how safe you are than the age of the car.
If you wreck an old car i don't think it is going to go well.
