One thing you have to remember that gas back then was like 49 cents a gallon...The cars then were big just because fuel was cheap...Then you needed power and performance for these cars so the engines were also big...They had comfort and style in the 60.s...Some car companys had to make cars so they can run them in the ever growing nascar circuit...Both ford and chrysler spent millions on cars that you and I could buy at the dealer...yes a nascar ready to run from the dealer!!!This is were the saying buy it on friday race it on sunday and sell it on monday came from...Just a few cars that come to mind are ford thunderbolt, ford torino talladega and the infamous super bird...All of these were comfy high horsepower monsters that you got direct from the dealer...How are cars in teh early 60s and beyond different to cars today.?
I could put your civic in the trunk of my 56 olds super 88 and still have room for camping gear for the 6 people in it. the people in the back could stretch out there legs with the front seat all the way back. Most of us would avoid any small car at any cost. That monster weighed in at close to 4500 lbs and would almost hit highway speeds without touching the gas pedal. Mileage was around 22-25 in town and over 35 on the highway, and the best part was that if I ran over a civic it felt like a speed bump. 4 people could sit on the hood and not leave a dent. If you hit a hydro pole, the pole always lost and you may have a small dent in the metal bumper.Even my 64 Corvair had more room than most current intermediate cars nowadays and averaged 35 mpg from a 6 cylinder turbo . And still had an all metal exterior . Non of this plastic rice burner crap. How are cars in teh early 60s and beyond different to cars today.?
Older cars = big

Newer cars = small

When you compare the size of the motor %26amp; weight of the car to todays cars the older cars still did pretty good.

The newer cars are safer as they absorb the wreck not like the older cars that only gets a small dent but the driver gets beat up.

I still like the old cars! Give me my 70 Mach 1 anytime!
performance was top notch compared to whats coming out today everybody is throwing money after.
